Build a modified NA/NB Miata (Street/AutoX/Track)

Share

This build-out covers the 1990-1998 Miata (NA; 1st generation) and 1999-2005 Miata (NB; 2nd generation)

We’ve broken down what you’d need to do to your NA or NB Miata/MX-5 to get it track ready.

**NOTE: The stages outlined below tend to be cumulative. For example, if you’re considering a Stage-3 build, you will be have to use some if not most of the upgrades from Stage-1 and Stage-2. For overlapping mods like suspension, you can skip to the higher stage, but pay attention to how the “set” comes together.

Stage 1 – Better than Stock (Autocross-able)

HPDE Approved Roll Bar (ie Hard Dog M2 Hard Core Double Diagonal). Roll Bar. Hard top alone is NOT good enough. For taller drivers the Hard Core Hardtop bar is 3″ more to the rear that the standard bar (which won’t work with a hard top). The standard bar is 1.25″ taller, but having the seat farther back can be more important depending on driver’s dimensions.

Stainless braided lines, motul 600 fluid, pads to taste. Almost every naturally aspirated Miata is fine with Carbotech XP pads, and to make life simpler bias wise, everyone running those pads uses XP10’s in the front and XP8’s in the back to get the bias right.
Brakes
Start with Dunlop Direzza ZIIs, they are fine for a while, or if more money available, go stickier.

Stage 2 – Hybrid Street/Track

Largest step here is Seats/Harnesses. Lots of choices. You CAN use stock seats and modify them to allow for a center hole, but it’s far from ideal/safe. Additionally, for taller folks you can do what’s called a “foamectomy” to a stock seat to obtain up to almost 2″ of additional clearance.

There are available sliders, as well as bolt in brackets HOWEVER.. almost everyone over 5’10” ends up going with “bolt to the floor”. To get the most room, folks cut out the rear mounting humps to more easily bolt to floor.  Harness Bar is $150 and bolts in to the above noted Roll Bar. Most go with 6 point harnesses, lower points are bolts like any other car.

Stage 3 – Dedicated Track Rat

Removable Steering wheel, removal of interior stuff, R-comps.. Brakes noted in Stage 1 are still massively sufficient. My ’99 has had zero cooling issues, but some cars at this point require cooling upgrades.)
New radiator with increased cooling is step 1, and normally sufficient for natural aspirated engines. Higher HP operations frequently have to move to slotted hoods.
Full Roll Cage (**If you want better, it’s off to Piper and ensure you have the wallet for it.)
